Abstract

The study examines the multifaceted nature of dog sled mobility, considering it both as a product of cultural heritage and a tourist attraction. Originating with Canada’s native population, the dog sled has played a fundamental role in shaping Arctic society and is historically documented in explorations like that of the renowned Captain Cook. Today, it has evolved from a survival necessity into a sustainable, slow, and gentle mode of mobility contributing to the co-creation of cultural and tourist knowledge about arctic landscapes. Additionally, it is recognized as one of the oldest and most extreme competitive sports. The article discusses how the dog sled appears as a cultural product, especially for those seeking to revive indigenous traditions, but its significance lies in its role as a tourist experience, particularly as part of nature-themed journeys in Arctic countries. In fact, dogsledding is also an example of a new “natureculture” that has no tourism purposes but is nevertheless supporting the development of tourism in arctic regions, highlighting the human-animal relationship. The research contributes to advancing the discourse on mobility and landscape studies, where there is a noticeable trend among travellers seeking active and engaging experiences in destinations, often embracing local traditions.
