Currently, the Albanian population, long tied to the Basilicata region, is at the centre of new migratory flows attracted by employment prospects, especially in the agricultural sector of the Metapontino area. In Basilicata, the critical issues arising from depopulation, ageing and the absence of services are very clear, as shown by the perimeter of the SNAI areas. Nevertheless, on a local scale, are emerging potentially attractive scenarios for international immigration. In the first section of the paper, the Albanian demographic structure and migration flows towards Italy are analysed; subsequently, population trends in Basilicata are considered, presenting the case study of Rotondella, around Matera. In this case, forms of interaction and rooting of migrants in the local fabric are observed, noting how immigration may affect the quality of life of the community, such as through the preservation of basic services. Qualitative-quantitative analyses also intend to investigate how these marginal areas, affected by constant migratory movements, can deal with the effects of the demographic decrease, also giving impulse to processes of territorial revitalisation.
