Abstract

The contribution aims to broaden the perspective of critical geography of disability to include celiac disease, a genetic autoimmune illness for which the only treatment is adherence to a gluten-free diet for life. After outlining its epidemiological features, territorial distribution, and market dynamics in the Italian context, the paper presents the results of a series of interviews with young people diagnosed for at least three years and residing in the sixth Municipality of Naples. The findings show how the experience of celiac disease is constructed through daily interactions with lived space, which shape possibilities of inclusion or exclusion, autonomy or dependence, while intersecting issues related to market logic, mobility, and the socio-economic and cultural context.
